Getting ready for ELM

As you start to look ahead and plan for ELM there’s some groundwork you can be getting done to prepare for an ELM application. We’ve split this work into four main steps (set out below) Read on for more guidance and suggestions to complete each step.

Getting started

The first step is to undertake a thorough review of the Common’s current Governance structure and finances. There are four key steps to check.

Head over to our Commons Governance page for more advice on getting your organisation in order.

The next job is to work out who needs to be involved. Doing this at the start should help to ensure things run smoothly and make sure no one is left out. For a checklist to work through, click below.

An important part of getting things set up is to gather the information that you already have related to the Common - maps, reports, surveys and any other data that helps to build a picture of the public goods on the Common. Here’s a checklist to get you started.

Public Goods

It is important to identify the public goods on your common. Click below to discover how to do this.

Preparing a Public goods map

There are lots of options available to help you draft a map of the public goods on the Common. This note gives an overview with the pros and cons of some of the options available.

Drafting a Common Management Plan

Having a Management Plan for your Common is likely to be a key part of Nature and Landscape recovery ELM agreements. We’ve had a go at designing a template to use. Click below to take a look, see how it works for you and let us know what you think.
