Mapping Environmental Assets - Course starting June 2025, Dartmoor

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Foundation for Common Land and Our Upland Commons project is pleased to announce that we are offering 12 fully funded places, each to the value of £500, on a new part-time short course recently launched by the University of Cumbria in partnership with Land App, to be delivered in Dartmoor through a combination of in-person and online sessions.

Register now for Bursary Places

Bursary places are available to:

  • Common rights holders

  • Anyone working on a farm with common rights, including family members

  • Commons owners, including private owners

  • An employee of an organisation owning or working on common land

As part of the bursary application process, you are also required to apply to the university.

To secure your bursary and a place on the course, you will need to pay an attendance deposit of £100 which is refundable if you attend 80% of the course.

This course combines practical fieldwork on farm visits with workshops and seminars at Princetown Visitor Centre and on farms within Dartmoor, alongside online evening lectures.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to use Land App to integrate your fieldwork observations with publicly available data, creating a layered map of environmental assets for an upland location. Additionally, you will be introduced to key methods for habitat classification and simple biodiversity surveys focusing on vegetation.

Please visit the University of Cumbria website for more details.

Contact tamsin@foundationforcommonland.org.uk with any questions about the bursary.
