Resilient Commoning in the North York Moors

The Resilient Commoning in the North York Moors Project resulted from discussions between the Foundation for Common Land and stakeholders in the area, building on the success of the £3m National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) Our Uplands Commons Project in the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, Dartmoor and Shropshire Hills. This scoping phase ran from October 2024 to March 2025 and was funded by a North York Moors Farming in Protected Landscapes grant.

This Resilient Commoning project focused on scoping opportunities to deliver positive outcomes for the landscape and people. With Commoners on three NYM commons we developed a model for delivery with recommendations for Commons support in the future, including funding, governance and practical land management.

With thanks to the North York Moors (NYM) National Park Head of Farming and Land Management, Farm Officers and FiPL Team and notably the North York Moors commoners and land agents for their engagement and contribution to shape this scoping project.
