Bracken Surveys Derwent and Buttermere Common 2024 

Scrub habitat in Coledale

The National Trust, on behalf of the Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Our Common Cause’ commissioned a survey of selected areas of bracken across the Derwent and Buttermere Common with the objective of locating breeding Stonechat Saxicola rubicola and Whinchat Saxicola rubetra. Both these species have a propensity to nest, amongst other habitat, within bracken beds on the open fell, especially Whinchat.
