Video Diary - Lizzie Weir, gathering on Kinniside

A hot day in summer, and Lizzie joins other commoners to bring sheep off Kinniside Common. Lizzie shot this film while heading up onto the fell on foot, before coming down again to meet the other commoners, and the whole collection of sheep, to cross the River Calder.

After being gathered off the fell, the sheep are sorted: a number of different flocks graze on the common. Each sheep is marked with the ear mark and smit mark of their flock (find out more about the marks here). Once they’re all back on their home farms, the sheep will be sheared. Their fleeces are removed, and they’ll grow a new one to keep them warm in the winter.
